Marching Percussion

Our marching percussion curriculum allows our students to focus on a singular interest area or grouping to gain proficiency. We offer instruction in marching snare drum, marching toms, marching bass drum, and general front ensemble performance (those wishing to focus exclusively on keyboard percussion or timpani can gain those skills by working in those specific curriculum tracks).

Whether preparing for indoor or field performance, each area of study within the marching percussion track includes the development of:

  • Contemporary techniques

  • Implement control

  • Speed development

  • Tone quality

  • Traditional and hybrid rudiments

  • Visual consistency

  • Multiple roll textures

  • Special effects

  • Implement selection

  • Maintenance and tuning of each instrument

  • Coordination of hands and feet

In addition, there are also areas that are specific to each battery instrument that are covered. These include:

  • Snare drum

    • Grip development (matched or traditional)

  • Toms

    • Drum-to-drum consistency, speed, and sound quality

    • Sweeps and scrapes

  • Bass drum

    •  “Hockett” part reading and segment rhythmic unity

Important Note:

Most of our students participating in the marching percussion tracks are performing or preparing to perform in a marching ensemble. A great many of these ensembles employ percussion specialists who work with the students. Often, these individuals employ varied concepts unique to their ensembles.

Here at NCSP we endeavor to contact these individuals when we enroll a student to the marching area to determine the specifics these instructors teach in their units (grip, style, tuning, etc.). It is always our intention to match their specifics when instructing their unit members.

"In 9th grade my son wanted to try out for the drum line at school with all his friends. He had never played any instrument before but loved the drums. The band director told him he would have to learn how to play and read music and suggested he enroll for the summer at NCSP. We did and he made the drum line that fall. Two years later he is still at NCSP and is now the Drum Captain at school."
