Steel Drums
Originating in the Caribbean, the steel drum has quickly found its place as both a solo and ensemble instrument throughout North America. The ease with which the “pans” are learned make them a quick addition to the skill set for the experienced percussionist as well as a great starting place for beginners and community members, who may have had little or no musical training. This instrument is also a great pathway to participation in music performance ensembles for the beginning player.

Although most students begin their study on the single lead pan, the instructors at the North Carolina School of Percussion provide instruction on the full range of steel pan instruments. The steel pan instruction track follows both traditional and contemporary playing styles to prepare the student quickly for performance opportunities.
