Who Are Our Instructors?

James S. Brandt

Founder & Director

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Brandt established a reputation as a drum set artist by the time he graduated high school and was active in the Detroit music scene. He went on to attend Michigan State University while also studying with Robert Pangborn and Salvatore Rabbio of the Detroit Symphony as well as Charlie Owen of the Philadelphia Orchestra. After graduating with a degree in music education and curriculum development, Jim began an extensive career as an educator and performer.

During the ensuing years, he produced a string of award winning bands and orchestras while also performing with ensembles that included the Detroit, Rochester, Lansing, and Grand Rapids symphonies as well as individual artists including Hubert laws, Lionel Hampton, Grover Washington Jr., Don Ellis, and The Carpenters. In 2000, Mr. Brandt completed a master’s degree in music education supervision at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Jim remains active as a composer, arranger, performer, clinician, adjudicator, educator, and guest lecturer. He has appeared as a featured soloist with the Ferndale High School Symphonic Band and the Michigan State University Wind Ensemble.

Mr. Brandt holds memberships in the Percussive Arts Society, ASCAP, and the Jazz Education Network. In addition, Jim is a member of the D’Addario Education Collective, the Sabian Education Network and the Vic Firth Educators’ Counsel.

Mr. Brandt’s students can be found performing in U.S. symphonies, major label recording studios, and on international music tours as well as with multiple DCI & WGI units.

As his schedule allows, many students study directly with Mr. Brandt. Others study with professional instructors that he has hand-selected in each instructional area. The selected instructors are performing professionals and specialists in specific areas of percussion performance. This allows the school to match the most appropriate instructor with each student.

All of the instructors at the school have passed background checks through the school.

From time to time, guest artists are also in residence at the school allowing all interested students to have an opportunity to study with touring professionals.

"My daughter took lessons for almost three years somewhere else and wanted to quit. One of her friends told her about NCSP. She is now part of the NCSP “family” and her coaching sessions are the high point of her week. Both of us are thrilled with the results…"
